1870’s polo team are collectively some of the most experienced international polo players in the game. Between them they have won countless titles including the Cartier World Cup and the Gold Cup. The team has had a very successful start to the 2011 season after a brilliant result in the Tyro Cup, and is currently competing in the semi-finals of the renowned Queens Cup
Player Profiles
John-Paul is currently the highest ranked New Zealand Polo Player on 8-goals and his ambition is to become the first New Zealand player to reach the maximum 10-goal ranking. In 2003 John-Paul won the prestigious Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup, held in Cowdray Park Polo club which he lists as a major career highlight alongside winning the 2008 Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
John-Paul spends the major part of each year playing polo in Australia, England, Argentina and South Africa as well as New Zealand.
Equal highest ranked player in Australia, Ruki is regarded as one of Australia’s most successful polo professionals, and as well as being in the world’s top 30, he is also one of the highest ranked non-Argentine players on the international circuit. Ruki regularly plays in the prestigious Argentinian Open, reflecting his huge skill and presence in the game.
In the past Ruki has played for the Jimmy Choo team in America for seven years and has also played in Prince Charles’ charity The Prince’s Trust matches, in which he played alongside Princes William and Harry. To ensure he always has the best ponies on hand, Ruki keeps his own in stables around the world with 15 ponies in Britain alone!
As a professional polo player since 2002, Robert divides his year spending 5 months in England, 4 in Australia and 3 months in Argentina. In his spare time, Robert likes to spend time at the beach or on the family property at Scone. His father is a polo player and his uncles have been players with Australia’s Goulburn Club. His career highlights include being an integral part of the winning team at the Gold Cup in Deauville, France and in the Kerry Packer Challenge Cup at Ellerston.
He was in the winning 2005 Easter International Team against New Zealand & also played for Australia at the Coronation Cup against England in July 2008.
Adrian Kirby was on the winning team at this year’s Midhurst Town Cup at Cowdray Park and on the winning team at the Ivan the Terrible challenge at Guards Polo Club.
A fully fledged polo aficionado, Adrian’s greatest passion is the game of polo and he plans his year around the British season, and can be frequently seen brushing up his game at Guards, Coworth Park and Cowdray Park.
